In the years that followed WWI, Britain was proud to produce the finest motorcycles in the world. Names like Triumph, Norton and Sunbeam dominated international competition, and the British industry pioneered a host of innovations that saw the motorcycle evolve from the slow belt-driven bike of the Edwardian era to the sophisticated machine that would make the 1930s a golden age. More than ever the motorcycle was a viable proposition for personal transport, and for many even quite privileged families in the 1920s a motorcycle and sidecar would be their only vehicle. This illustrated review of the motorcycles made in the vintage period between 1919 and 1930 shows how the British manufacturers led the way, with the overhead valve, then the overhead camshaft engine, better brakes, lighting and tyres. All the most important motorcycle manufacturers and models are represented, including the Brough Superior and the groundbreaking Ariel Square Four. Illustrated throughout with black and white photos and pictures. Book includes lists of further reading, clubs and related places to visit in Britain.
